As British as afternoon tea and antisocial behavior orders, this layer has survived two world wars, the ban on marches pumps and the vagaries of fashion for almost 100 years to become a classic.

With its large hood, protection, heavy fabric, leather ties and horn "outside", the film began life as part of the uniform of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

He became a standard feature in the Second World War, when two of its most enthusiastic were Lieutenant-Colonel Sir David Stirling, founder of the SAS, and "Monty" (Field Marshal Montgomery), who lent his name to the Burberry duffle coat, it is still available.

After the war, large numbers of layers army surplus canvas was bought by the British company Gloverall and became an instant success. When that supply ran out, in 1954 Gloverall began making his own version, adapted from the form and style military jacket for everyday wear.

In 1956 a woman cutting has occurred, followed by a version for children. Almost overnight, the duffle coat was being used by everyone from Bing Crosby to the politician Michael Foot, university students and the "Angry Young Men "of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the left.

However, Charlotte Ford, granddaughter of automobile magnate Henry Ford, who moved layer a few notches on the scale of style when, in 1965, fled to St Moritz with Greek tycoon Stavros Niarchos is a classic Gloverall.

The duffle coat Gloverall remains largely unchanged today. A traditional example of "le style anglais", which has legions of followers, the coat continues to attract fans fashion throughout the world (80 percent of the coats of Gloverall factory in east London are exported to Japan and Europe), while many British customers buy duffel coats, as part of their children (expensive) private school uniforms.

Burberry, which traces its first layers of canvas back to the days of the great explorers Ernest Shackleton, in early 1900, lately has taken the crown canvas with designer Christopher Bailey's endorsement.

Burberry coats Montgomery canvas, along with the classics Gloverall have always been done in England, and have been published in the actress Thandie Newton, Bryan Ferry and his sons Otis and Isaac, and members of bands Razorlight and Kasabian.

With this heritage and cast of supporters, who cares if Kate Moss prefers leather jackets and vintage leather bomber? The layer of fabric are here to stay.
