The Chicago Cubs Legend - Ernie Banks

It is often difficult to compare the legendary players of Major League Baseball in that by making comparisons based on statistics, the general approach, falls on pure performance in the field. It also tends to reflect on the fact that these numbers have had in the success teams and players how successful an individual has strengthened a team to championship levels. The other players, regardless of the individual of interest, are considered too often in a state of plenty, due to the perception that their effort was not sufficient to allow the team standing on a podium in the championship. Baseball is a team sport, but a team sport loosely based on individual effort. Looking beyond the numbers to the intangibles of attitude and enthusiasm for the game, the greatness of a player can not be judged solely on statistics. Ernie Banks is one of the players, as the history of baseball.

Ernie Banks was a of the best players, coaches and personalities to ever don a Cubs uniform. Considered by many as the most popular player in history, the banks knew I was a nice guy. He was very simple and was a friend of everyone he knew. Some sources say that gave rise to the phrase "Never met a man she did not liked it. "Banks was quiet and unassuming. He let his bat and glove speak for him. There was an endless enthusiasm for the game of baseball. As legend has it, After the Cubs finished stamped twice in a double header, Ernie Banks reports suggested, "let's play three." In many cases, banks quoted as having said: "It's a beautiful day for a baseball game. Let's play two!" Any image of Ernie Banks of his playing days exudes joy that comes from playing the game of baseball. There are none that do not have that big smile, infectious that has become famous. It became so popular, in fact, became known as Mr. Cub. Many sources attribute the never quit and "baseball is fun" attitude of the Cubs organization directly to Ernie Banks.

Although the last Chicago Cubs' World Series win was in 1908 and their last World Series appearance was in 1945 (he lost dramatically in a seventh game), there is still no team more hopeful and inspired in the Major Leagues "lovable losers from Chicago." The eternal hope, as say, and after nearly 100 years, "eternal" is starting to live up to its reputation as a very, very long.

The woes of the Cubs have worsened in recent years. They produced a stretch of twenty years (1947-1967) to finish in the bottom half of their division for the regular season, partly during the days of Ernie Banks. However, each new season brings with it the possibility of reaching the World Series and finally break the curse "goat", a curse at Wrigley Field and the Cubs in the fifth game of the 1945 World Series. According to the story, a local owner of the Chicago bar attended the game and was allowed entry into some unusual circumstances. When ordered to leave Wrigley Field to take his goats with him, apparently a "goat-smelling" Billy Sianis curse 'was issued in that World Series would never again play in the confines of Wrigley Field.

As the myth surrounding the validity of the curse grows with each step does not hold the season, has a simple and comfortable existence in baseball, the sport that prefers urban myth, legend and superstition logic. In 2003, the curse was broken when the Cubs nearly matched with the Atlanta Braves for the Division Series National League. Ernie Banks never had a chance to play in the championship series of the League, World Series, or any other postseason game. Him however, proud of himself, and dance club consistently leading the league in many areas. Banks was one of the stars in each season from 1955-1962. He also made the stars all cut in 1965, 1967 and 1969. Establish a standard of principles for the future of the iron men, banks played in 424 consecutive games since the day he became a puppy, a record at that time. His longest streak of consecutive games is the 717. He hit 40 homers in 1955, a record for MLB shortstops, and led the NL in homers in 1958, with 47 explosions in the fence. The banks involved five Grand Slam tournaments in 1955 and topped 100 runs RBI. He was awarded the MVP of the National League in 1958 and again in 1959. An amazing achievement when you consider the fact that the Cubs were nowhere close to being in the struggle to win the division pennant. His 1959 MVP season boasted 45 homers and led the league with 143 RBIs. Ernie Banks won the NL Gold Glove award at shortstop in 1960, and had the fewest errors in the majors. He also led the league in homers and runs batted in that year.

Throughout his career, Ernie Banks became the leader of all time in the Cub:

* The total base (4706)
* Home runs (512)

Banks also set many records NL, entered the room of Fame Major League Baseball in 1977, and the number 14 was the first to be retired by the Cubs. When finished playing in 1971, went on to coach with the Cubs. In May 1973, when Cubs manager Whitey Lockman was ejected for arguing a decision, the banks managed the rest of the game. It was technically the first African American to manage in the major leagues.

Infused into the heart of every Cub fan (and there are many) is the spirit and exuberance and love for the game of baseball was personified by Ernie Banks. He brought much more than outstanding performances and good statistical game. He did it with vigor, enthusiasm and ability to enjoy the game that has fans Cub incurably infected worldwide.
