Intelligent Turtle Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Sea turtles are highly intelligent creatures of nature, but they keep coming to Puerto Vallarta regardless of the swine flu scare, the border city drug wars, or global recession? They are not visiting Vallarta for its perfect weather, its eight golf courses, its world class fishing on the high seas, hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs and discos, magnificent sunsets, and tropical flora and fauna colors in the vicinity of the Sierra Madre foothills, visiting Vallarta strictly for its 35 miles of sandy beaches. However, the fact that they love the beaches in PV is just a small hint of what makes the turtle so incredibly intelligent.

Sea turtles are a unique radiation was different from all other turtles during the Late Cretaceous, the "era of the dinosaurs, at least 100 million years ago. It is difficult to imagine about 65 million years ago during the extinction event of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT mass extinction), the planet suffered catastrophic events, such massive impacts of asteroids and / or volcanic activity resulting in huge major climate changes that affect all of Earth plants and animal life. Sea turtles are among the few species to survive these traumatic events and climate-related changes.

Currently, there are only seven species of life of sea turtles around the world and members of five or six of these species to visit Vallarta management annually. Six of the seven species have hard shells and only one has a soft shell, is the leatherback, the largest of them all and a periodic visitor Vallarta. Leatherbacks grow for 30 years, the young weigh about one ounce, to maturity of up to 1,300 pounds and measure up to 7 meters long and 5 feet wide, and they can live to more than 80 years of age.

Although sea turtles that represent the majority of species visiting Vallarta, most of them are of the Olive Ridley species. They are much smaller than the leatherback turtle, measuring less than 3 feet long and weighing just over 100 pounds with dark green heart-shaped olive shells dome.

Olive Ridley turtles leave their eggs that weigh less than an ounce, crawling out of its nest buried clawing their way to the surface of the sand, and then head directly over the water to start life around 100 brothers at his side. They are very lucky if you ever do with water, and whether certain predators (including humans without thinking) do not get while still are in the tank, many other predators such as crabs and birds anxiously awaiting their journey across the beach to the water's edge. Of course, as soon as these little delectable morsels fell into the water, fish in the area immediately with them at dinner! Consequently, a very small percentage of these baby turtles Marine every time they have managed to reach the open sea.

Of the lucky few sea turtles survive their entry into this cruel world, growing to maturity, It will take more than 15 years, is a formidable task. If certain fish do not get in their first year of life, longline fishermen tend to catch or accidentally networks at any time during the ripening process, let alone at any time during his adult life. With survival odds stacked so heavily against turtles marine, which now are considered a threatened or endangered olive ridleys along the Pacific coast of Mexico are classified as endangered by the Fisheries Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Well, now that we know a little about these air-breathing prehistoric reptiles, what is it that makes them so incredibly smart? Well, first you have to give credit to survive throughout history while almost all other forms of life! Secondly, perhaps were the first creatures that have global positioning systems (GPS)! Yes, 100 million years before mere mortals invented the GPS, marine turtles, with its high sensitivity to the Earth's magnetic field, always knew where they were in relation to which born. Imagine, these prehistoric creatures are able to swim a couple thousand miles out to sea, enjoy life floating and swimming in open water for up 80, but without losing their bearings, and I still remember exactly where they were born!

Due to its incredible ability to always know their own location, reaching maturity at the age of 15 years or older, women who are ready to lay their eggs always return to the beach where they were born. Consequently, for about five months each year, the beaches of Puerto Vallarta is home to hundreds of female sea turtles that come ashore to nest. These are the women themselves who were born on the same beaches beautiful 15 to 50 years ago! So, with luck, and today with the attendance, a new generation of sea turtles starts.

In certain areas along the Pacific coast of Mexico, the Olive Ridley sea turtles invade the earth in "arrivals" of 100 or more at a time, but in Puerto Vallarta usually either alone or in small groups scattered thinly over the beach. Due to its scarcity, its return to local beaches has become a tourist attraction important for visitors of Vallarta. More importantly, today there are a small group of conservation volunteers, the Ecological Society of the West, Puerto Vallarta that does everything possible to protect these endangered animals. This group was first organized in 1993 and has since done everything possible for the eggs and hatchlings are protected all predators, which would give the next generation of sea turtles a better chance of survival. In some respects, intelligent sea turtles Vallarta think in a way similar to that of the tourists visiting smarter Vallarta once they have been here, keep coming back! So if you've never visited this magnificent region of Mexico's Banderas Bay, maybe it's time for to consider. Not only will you see and do everything imaginable in ideal climatic conditions in a region that can only be described as Paradise, but from June to December will also be able to observe the nesting habits of these prehistoric sea turtle with its built-in GPS and long distance navigation systems.

Picture yourself sitting in one of the many restaurants overlooking the sea sipping a margarita after watching a sunset as the main attraction, the peak the night begins, a handful of great female sea turtles lumber, literally, out of the water and reach the beach in front of your eyes in search of their rearing grounds. Although it is usually too dark to film, witnesses of a sea turtle invasion is a sight not likely soon forget!
